Carols Songbook

GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN

While shepherds kept their watching
O’er silent flocks by night
Behold throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light
The shepherds feared and trembled
And lo! Above the earth,
Rang out the angel chorus
That hailed our Saviour’s birth

Go tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere;
Go tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born

And lo, when they had heard it,
They all bowed down and prayed
Then travelled on together
To where the Baby lay
Down in a lowly manger
The humble Christ was born
And brought us God’s salvation
That blessed Christmas morn!

Go tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere;
Go tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born

That Baby in a manger,
Our Saviour, He became
And on a cross He showed us
God’s everlasting grace
The curse of sin was broken
When He died on the cross
The power of death defeated,
When from the grave He rose.

Go tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere;
Go tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born
Yes Jesus Christ is born

The humble candy cane has been synonymous with Christmas for generations. By tradition, white is symbolic for Jesus’ purity, red for His blood, and the triple red stripe for the Holy Trinity.

ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH

Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o'er the plains
And the mountains in reply
Echo back their joyous strains

Glo – o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-oria,
In excelsis Deo
Glo – o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-oria,
In excelsis De-e-eo

Shepherds, why this jubilee
Why your joyous strains prolong
Say what may the tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song

Glo – o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-oria,
In excelsis Deo
Glo – o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-oria,
In excelsis De-e-eo

Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ whose birth the angels sing
Come, adore on bended knee
Christ the Lord, the newborn King

Glo – o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-oria,
In excelsis Deo
Glo – o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-oria,
In excelsis De-e-eo

See Him in a manger laid
Jesus, Lord of heav’n and earth
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid
With us, sing our Saviour’s birth

Glo – o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-oria,
In excelsis Deo
Glo – o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-oria,
In excelsis Deo
In excelsis Deo
In excelsis De-e-eo

HARK THE HERALD ANGELS SING

Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled.”
Joyful, all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With th’angelic host proclaim:
“Christ is born in Bethlehem.”
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ by highest heav'n adored,
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come,
Offspring of a Virgin's womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate Deity,
Pleased as man with man to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings,
Ris'n with healing in His wings.
Mild He lays His glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!”

DID YOU KNOW...

Some carols had different titles originally – can you name these?

“Adeste Fidelis”
“Cantique Noel”
“Ainglean chuala sinn gu h-ard”
“Hark, How All The Welkin Rings”

DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR?

Said the night wind to the little lamb
Do you see what I see?
Way up in the sky little Lamb
Do you see what I see?
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as bright as a kite
With a tail as bright as a kite

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear?
A song, a song, high above the tree
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king
Do you know what I know?
In your palace wall mighty king
Do you know what I know?
A child, a child, shivers in the cold
Let us bring Him silver and gold
Let us bring Him silver and gold

Said the king to the people everywhere
Listen to what I say
Pray for peace people everywhere
Listen to what I say
The child, the child, sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light

SILENT NIGHT

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

DID YOU KNOW...

Silent Night is the world’s most famous carol – it even led to a 24 hour truce in World War I. Silent Night was heard across the trenches on Christmas Day in 1914 - in German, French and English! Arms were laid down, with gifts and food exchanged.

O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL

O Come all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant!
O Come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem!
Come and behold Him,
Born the King of angels.

O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord!

Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above!
Glory to God, all glory in the highest.

O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord!

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee,
Born this happy morning;
Jesus, to Thee be all glory giv’n!
Word of the Father,
Now in flesh appearing.

O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord!

We give you all the glory,
We give you all the glory,
We give you all the glory,
Christ the Lord!

O HOLY NIGHT

Oh, holy night!
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth
Long lay the world
In sin and error pining
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn

Fall on your knees!
Oh, hear the angel voices
Oh night divine
Oh night when Christ was born
Oh night divine
Oh night, when Christ was born

Truly He taught us
To love one another
His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break
For the slave is our brother
And in His name, all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we
Let all within us praise His holy name

Christ is the Lord!
Oh, praise His Name forever
His power and glory evermore proclaim
His power and glory evermore proclaim

Fall on your knees!
Oh, hear the angel voices
Oh night divine
Oh night when Christ was born
Oh night divine
Oh night when Christ was born

JOY TO THE WORLD

Joy to the world, the Lord is come
Let earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare Him room
And Heaven and nature sing
And Heaven and nature sing
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing

Joy to the world, the Saviour reigns
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounds in joy
Repeat the sounds in joy
Repeat, repeat, the sounds in joy

He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders, wonders, of His love

DID YOU KNOW...

It took over a century before the classic tune was found for Isaac Watts' beautiful words, which we know today as Joy To The World. Watts based "Joy" around Psalm 98 - and to this day, it remains the most published Christian song in America, appearing in 1600 hymnals.

I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas
I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas

From the bottom of my heart

IT IS SO

CHORUS
Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen
It is so, It is so!
Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen
It is so, It is so!

He has saved us, He has redeemed us
He will hear us, when we call.
And when afflictions come on the righteous
He will deliver us out of them all.

CHORUS

He is the Alpha, and Omega
He’s the beginning, and the end.
Through every trial, and tribulation
He always causes His people to win!

CHORUS

And we say yes, yes, yes, yes
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
Yes and Amen, yes and amen
Yes and amen, it is so, it is so!

CHORUS
