There are lots of great reasons for serving in any organisation. Here are five reasons the Bible gives us for serving one another as the people of God.

Jesus served us – Mark 10:45
In response to a question about who should sit at Jesus’ right and left, Jesus says that the path to greatness in the kingdom is by being a servant and those who want to be first, must be the slave or all. He went on to say that the reason for our serving is because He came to serve us by giving His life as a ransom for us. Do we need any more reason to serve??

Jesus modelled it and commanded us to do it – John 13:1-17
Jesus demonstrated what serving one another looked like when He took off His outer clothing, wrapped a towel around His waist and washed His disciples’ feet. He said that if He as our Lord and Teacher was washing feet, then as His followers, we too should wash one another’s feet.

God created us to do good works – Eph 2:8-10
No amount of good deeds can ever make us right with God as only the grace of God and our faith in Jesus can do that. But now that we are saved, Paul says that we are created in Christ to do good works which God has prepared in advance for us to do. Serving one another is part of this good work that God has called us to do. It is what we were created for!

Service is an act of worship to God – Rom 12:1-8, 1 Cor 12:4-11
Serving by using what God has given us is one way that we ‘present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.’ Though we have different gifts, we are to use them for the ‘common good’ because we are one body and we ‘belong to each other’. It is the Spirit of God that distributes the different gifts and God is at work through all the gifts when we come together to worship Him. When we serve one another, we please God.

Service grows the Church and makes it strong – Eph 4:11-16
God’s plan is that all His people would be equipped to do works of service, so that the body of Christ may grow stronger. As we serve, the Church will grow in unity and maturity and attain to the full measure of Christ. How amazing to think that our serving contributes to the health, growth and strength of the body of Christ!
